What is semantic memory?

A type of long-term memory that stores general knowledge and facts about the world

Semantic memory refers to the recollection of factual information, such as the names of capitals, historical events, and the meaning of words. It is a key component of human memory and plays a crucial role in our ability to understand and interact with the world around us.

Semantic memory is like a vast library where we store and retrieve information about the world, similar to how a librarian retrieves books from a shelf to provide information to readers.

For example, when you recall the capital of France or the definition of a word, you are using your semantic memory. Similarly, when a virtual assistant like Siri or Alexa provides information about a historical event or a famous person, it is using its semantic memory to retrieve and generate a response.

Semantic memory is used in various aspects of our daily lives, such as learning new information, recognizing objects and people, and communicating with others. In AI, semantic memory is used to improve natural language processing, machine learning, and knowledge representation.

One common misconception about semantic memory is that it is the same as episodic memory, which refers to the recollection of personal experiences and events. While both types of memory are important, they serve distinct functions and are stored in different parts of the brain.

The concept of semantic memory was first introduced by psychologists Endel Tulving and Wayne Donaldson in the 1970s. Since then, it has been extensively studied in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.
