What is objective?

A goal or target that an AI system aims to achieve

In AI, an objective refers to the desired outcome or result that a system is designed to accomplish. It is the primary goal that the system strives to achieve through its actions, decisions, or predictions.

Think of an objective like a destination on a map. Just as a GPS navigation system aims to guide you to your desired location, an AI system aims to reach its objective, which is its desired outcome or goal.

For instance, in image recognition, the objective of an AI system might be to accurately classify images into different categories, such as objects, animals, or scenes.

Objectives are used in various AI applications, such as machine learning, robotics, and decision-making systems. They provide a clear direction and focus for the system, allowing it to make decisions and take actions that align with its goal.

A common misconception is that an objective is the same as a constraint. While constraints limit the actions of an AI system, an objective defines what the system is trying to achieve.

The concept of an objective has been around since the early days of AI research, where it was used to define the goals of simple AI systems. Over time, the concept has evolved to accommodate more complex AI applications and systems.
