What is human in the loop?

A system where a human is involved in the decision-making process of an artificial intelligence or machine learning model

Human in the loop refers to the practice of having a human oversee and correct the decisions made by an AI system, especially in situations where the stakes are high or the consequences of error are significant

Think of it like a quality control process in a factory, where a human inspector checks the products coming off the assembly line to ensure they meet the required standards, just as a human in the loop checks the output of an AI system to ensure it is accurate and reliable

For example, in self-driving cars, a human driver may be required to take control of the vehicle in certain situations, such as construction zones or unexpected events, to ensure safety

This approach is used in applications such as autonomous vehicles, medical diagnosis, and financial trading, where the AI system makes decisions, but a human is involved to validate or override those decisions if necessary

One common misconception is that human in the loop is a temporary solution until AI systems become more advanced, but in reality, it is a deliberate design choice to ensure that AI systems are transparent, accountable, and reliable

The concept of human in the loop has been around since the early days of AI research, but it has gained significant attention in recent years with the increasing use of AI in critical applications
