What is centroid?

The central point of a shape or cluster

A centroid is the point where a shape or cluster would balance if it were placed on a pin. It's a way to summarize the location of a group of points or a shape in a single point.

Think of a seesaw: the centroid is like the point where you could place the fulcrum and the seesaw would balance, even if the people on either side are different weights.

In image processing, the centroid of a shape can be used to track the movement of an object in a video. For example, the centroid of a car in a video can be used to track its movement over time.

Centroids are used in many areas, including image processing, data analysis, and machine learning, to represent the average position of a group of points or a shape.

A common misconception is that the centroid is always the same as the average position of a group of points. However, this is only true if the points are weighted equally. If the points have different weights or densities, the centroid will be different from the average position.

The concept of a centroid has been around for centuries and was first used in geometry to describe the center of gravity of a shape.
