How to write better prompts
Practical techniques for clearer AI instructions.
Better prompts often include: role ("You are a helpful editor"), task ("Rewrite this email"), context ("For a client in healthcare"), format ("Use bullet points"), and constraints ("Under 200 words").
If the first answer is weak, refine your prompt rather than giving up. Add examples of what you want, or say what was wrong with the previous answer.
A simple prompt framework
- 1
Role
Tell AI who it should act as — e.g. 'You are a patient teacher.'
- 2
Task
State what you want — summarise, rewrite, compare, list.
- 3
Context
Add audience, goal, and relevant background.
- 4
Format
Specify bullets, table, word limit, or tone.
Examples
- •Adding "for a beginner audience" to simplify explanations
- •Specifying "formal British English" for tone
- •Saying "do not invent statistics" to reduce hallucinations
Key points
- ✓Include role, task, context, format, and constraints
- ✓Refine prompts when the first answer misses the mark
- ✓Examples in your prompt can guide the AI
- ✓Practice and iteration improve results
